Discover Primary Traces, an inspiring exhibition showcasing the sculptural works of Richard H. Alpert. Known for his dynamic abstract forms, vibrant colors, and intricate spatial constructions, Alpert’s work invites viewers to explore movement, geometry, and depth through bold, carefully balanced compositions.

Alpert’s artistic journey began in New York City and evolved through formative study at the University of Pittsburgh and the San Francisco Art Institute. Influenced by thinkers and creators ranging from physicist Richard Feynman to artist Marcel Duchamp and photographer Jan Dibbets, Alpert brings a multidisciplinary curiosity to every piece. His career has spanned exhibitions across the United States, Europe, and Japan, and includes a National Endowment Fellowship Grant in Sculpture.

Primary Traces offers an intimate look at the evolution of his artistic voice—one shaped not only by exploration and experimentation, but also by resilience. Following the loss of his San Francisco studio in a 1986 explosion and fire, Alpert rebuilt both his practice and creative direction, continuing to push the boundaries of sculptural form.

This interactive workshop is designed to help supervisors better understand their own emotional patterns and how those patterns influence their effectiveness at work.

Participants will complete a Social and Emotional Intelligence assessment prior to or during the session and receive individualized results. Using those results as a foundation, we will explore the four quadrants of Emotional Intelligence and discuss how each area connects directly to supervision, decision-making, communication, and team dynamics.

The Secret Codes curriculum uses cutting edge science to teach beginning reading skills and prevent reading failure.

One 50-minute session occurs each day Monday through Thursday during June and July. The camp is open to all children who want to get a jump start learning to read or who are struggling to learn to read.

During camp:

Beginning readers will be taught the foundations of reading so that they can become good readers.

Students who are currently struggling will be taught to read with an effective intervention to help them become stronger readers.

Designed for both beginning and advanced musicians, the camp offers instruction in a collaborative and engaging environment led by jazz faculty and regional musicians.

Participants will explore a variety of areas, including large band performance, jazz theory, improvisation, master classes, and (for advanced students) small jazz combos. The camp concludes with a final concert where students will perform for family and friends.

This camp is held in honor of Josiah Fletcher, a talented young bassist from Pittsburg High School whose passion for jazz and making music with others continues to inspire. The program celebrates his legacy by providing students the opportunity to grow musically and connect with others through jazz.

Dust off your photo books, dig up those albums from back in the day, and grab a flash drive. We'll help you scan them!

Axe Library Special Collections will assist you with scanning your images so they can be archived and saved for generations to come. The City of Pittsburg will also be collecting Pittsburg memorabilia - merchandise, signs, books, apparel, etc. to put into their Historical Exhibit to be displayed July - Sept at the Miners Hall Museum. You can donate the items or lend them to the museum for a short time to be shared with the community.

This unique program brings together students from around the world who want to improve their piano performance while strengthening their English skills in an immersive American campus environment.

Certificate of Participation

Participants will receive a certificate of participation. This is a non-credit, non-degree program. This is a recreational program only.

Housing & Meals

On-campus housing and all meals are included for participants attending the summer music camp, providing a full residential experience. Participants stay in university residence halls and enjoy catered meals on campus.

Performance Venues

Participants will perform and learn in McCray Recital Hall, a historic and intimate performance space known for its warm acoustics and long tradition of student and guest recitals. They’ll also experience the state-of-the-art Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, a modern venue that offers professional-level performance facilities and an inspiring environment for young musicians.

Eligibility

Basic piano and English skills are required. Adult learners from around the world are welcome.Participants under 18 must travel with an adult chaperone.Chaperones are responsible for their own expenses.

Airport

A free airport shuttle will be provided to and from the Joplin Regional Airport (JLN). This is the preferred airport which is a 30-minute drive from campus. Connections to this airport are available on United Airlines from Denver and Chicago.

Here are alternative airports, however, transportation to and from Pittsburg, Kansas, is not included and will be at the participant's own expense: Kansas City International Airport (MCI) (2-hour drive); Springfield-Branson National Airport (SGF) (1.5-hour drive); Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport (XNA) (1.5-hour drive); Tulsa International Airport (TUL) (2-hour drive).

Scholarship Opportunity

Participants who complete this Summer Camp and plan to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree at Pittsburg State University will receive a $60 application fee waiver and a $1,000 scholarship for the academic program, if admissible.

Reena Berger Natenberg is an accomplished pianist and professor of piano at Pittsburg State University. Known for her expressive artistry and dedication to student mentorship, she has performed internationally and brings extensive experience in piano pedagogy and performance.

Isaac Hernandez is a collaborative pianist and educator who specializes in ensemble performance and accompaniment. His work helps students develop strong musical collaboration skills and a confident stage presence.

The day will include two performances: a matinee for local elementary schools and an evening concert open to the public.

Faculty and staff housed in Grubbs Hall will host a 150th birthday celebration for that late professor at noon on Friday, Sept. 25, in the basement lobby. The event will feature cake and brief remarks highlighting his life and legacy.

Grubbs served Pittsburg State University as a professor of history and economics and completed two terms in the Kansas Legislature. Known for his dedication to teaching, he remained on the faculty well past the mandatory retirement age, retiring in 1959 at the age of 83. He died at home just a few blocks from campus at age 92.

In addition to his academic and public service, Grubbs was a longtime advisor to the Epsilon chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity and was once recognized as the oldest fraternity sponsor in the United States.

Grubbs Hall, originally known as the O.F. Grubbs Academic Building, was constructed at the corner of Cleveland and Joplin streets as a classroom building. Today it is home to the departments of Communication and English & Modern Languages, the Grubbs Hall Studio Theatre, and the Communication Center.

In 1960, the main living room of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity house — located between Carnie Smith Stadium and the Wilkinson Alumni Center — was dedicated as the O.F. Grubbs Room.

Upon his death, Grubbs was survived by his wife, Rose, and their son, Richard Kent Grubbs.

The Sept. 25 event is open to campus and community members interested in celebrating Pittsburg’s sesquicentennial and honoring a figure whose life was closely intertwined with the city and the university.
